Suffrage PRoject: Expanded
We began The Suffrage Project: Online by focusing on women pioneers of San Diego to celebrate the 100th anniversary of ratification of the 19th amendment and highlight the lesser known stories of everyday women from vastly different histories. For the second portion of this project, we expand our definition of Suffrage to not only women but all Americans. We have asked company members to look into their own histories and tell stories that honor the diverse makeup of both our region and our company.
Suffrage historically means ‘a short intercession or prayer.’ The Suffrage Project: Expanded is just that, a prayer for a more perfect union that continues to consider the universal right to vote as paramount to a healthy democracy.
We begin the second chapter of our story with…
Woman: Unraveling
Meant to be the opening to the final section of Sadie Weinberg’s Reimagining Suffrage Suite this solo is the embodiment of the solo voice within a movement. A successful movement of any kind asks the individuals that make up the movement to give up a little part of themselves for the greater good. Zephyr Unfolding
The final section of Weinberg’s Reimagining Suffrage Suite, this piece for 10 dancers begs the question, “at what point does one sacrifice their own needs for a cause greater than oneself?” This piece was originally performed in LITVAKdance’s Fall 2019 production and was slated to be performed in our cancelled show at the Lyceum Theater last April.
The Ceiling
A playful take on the suffrage movement of the early 1900’s performed by Bezti Roe. This work is inspired by Roe’s grandmothers (Weinberg’s great-grandmother’s), who were young women when the 19th Amendment was ratified. Art work by Wren Polansky (Weinberg’s sister)
Má’s Journey
Company dancer April Tra made this solo in honor of the things her mother both gained and lost when leaving her home country of Vietnam as a refugee after the Vietnam War that displaced so many. Her parents finally gained full citizenship and the right to vote a little over three years ago.
